NL reports no new COVID-19 cases, confirms 2 more aboard anchored freighter

Newfoundland and Labrador reports no new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, but two more were confirmed aboard the cargo ship Iver Ambition, currently anchored in Conception Bay.

This brings the total of confirmed positive cases aboard the ship to 14 of its crew members and the number of active cases in the province to 16. All crew members are still isolated on the ship and there is no no risk to the community, the health ministry said in a press release.

No new recovery is reported and there is no one in hospital due to COVID-19. All of the province’s active cases are currently in the Eastern Health Region.

To date, 162,451 people have been tested for COVID-19 in the province, including 246 since Thursday’s update.

The province hit a milestone on Monday with more than half a million doses of the vaccine administered. As of Friday, more than 80% of the eligible population had received at least one dose and just over 28% had received two doses.

The Department of Health plans to issue updates on weekdays via a press release, as briefings will now take place every two weeks, with the next scheduled for July 21. The ministry said it would not release updates on weekends or provincial holidays.
